Berlin Sauna Map

Twenty Berlin saunas and spas, priced and plotted as an open-world game atlas.

2026mapdatastatic site

A guide to Berlin’s saunas drawn like the world map of an open-world game: twenty venues as blips on a hand-built atlas of districts, water, parks, roads and rail, each with prices, opening hours and a verdict.

What makes it different

  • A Finnish score. Every venue is rated out of 10 as a sauna — heat, löyly, and whether you are allowed to throw water yourself — kept separate from how nice the spa around it is.
  • Löyly, spelled out. Each sauna says who throws the water: staff (an Aufguss), you, or a machine.
  • One self-contained file. The whole site is a single static HTML page of about 900 KB with the map and images inlined. No runtime API calls, no keys, no server.

It keeps itself current

A weekly job re-reads each venue’s own website and rewrites a price or closure date only where it can prove the change from the page itself. It refuses to write when a figure would halve or double, or when too many things change at once. Everything it cannot prove becomes a single issue for a human to look at.

Reviews come in as GitHub issues and are validated before they are folded into the map, so nobody can post as someone else.

Built with

Python build scripts, OpenStreetMap data via Overpass, inline SVG, and GitHub Actions. Photos are from Wikimedia Commons and credited in place; venues without a freely licensed photo get a zoomed crop of the atlas instead.
